So it made me wonder, were we hurting our relationship by opting to strike out on our own? I asked Melissa Johari, a counselor known as the Couple Wellness Expert in Toronto, to weigh in. ![]() After all, traveling to exotic terrain and sharing new experiences is a great ritual of togetherness. Staying in touch every day is a no-ifs-ands-or-buts rule we enforce when either one of us is abroad. We texted each other every day and Skyped from opposite time zones, enduring through spotty reception. We hiked an ancient pilgrimage trail, kayaked toward a floating Torii gate, hung out with some cute deer, and ate our weight in rice balls ( onigiris) and savory grilled pancakes ( okonomiyaki). I later met up with a small group of fellow travelers, which allowed me to traverse the rest of the country in the safety of friendly strangers-an important consideration when you’re a five-foot-two woman traveling alone. For the first three days, I aimlessly walked through the shopping arcades of Osaka and ordered food for one. Last year, I went to Japan for two weeks. You also create a chance to miss and want each other, and I can’t think of a better feeling than seeing your significant other after some time apart. Johari reassures me that it’s good for relationships since most people return from solo vacations more rejuvenated, easygoing, and patient. As much as my boyfriend and I love traveling together, the itch to travel alone will always be there. Still, Johari advises couples to take at least one trip a year together, if only for a weekend. I was jealous but I didn’t resent him for being there because he was supportive of my traveling to Vietnam only a few months earlier. I related with this: two years ago, my boyfriend went to Turkey and texted me shots of delicious breakfast platters and a selfie against the backdrop of Cappadocia’s fairy chimneys. “Is it fair that the person left behind is responsible for the chores and childcare while the other gets to enjoy themselves and take a break? It’s only fair that both people get to have that same opportunity,” she says. Johari also says if one person goes away, then the other person should be able to do the same or else resentment can creep up, especially if there are children involved. A retreat together, not apart, is the better antidote. Skipping town when there’s underlying relationship tension can do more harm than good. If you find yourself saying it’s to take a break from your partner, that’s a major red flag. It’s important to ask yourself why you want to travel alone, she adds. “If the husband wants to go on a fishing trip with his buddies for a week and his wife may not be interested in that, then she is better off arranging a little getaway for herself,” says Johari. In fact, if both parties have different ideas of how they want to spend their time off, separate trips might be the best way to pursue each person’s interests while avoiding the inevitable vacation fight. ![]() Johari says that every couple is different, but if there is trust, openness, and communication in a relationship, then there’s no harm in taking separate vacations. You’re not beholden to compromise and scheduling either. Solo travel yields a different kind of experience you’re forced to make new friends and rely on your own sensibilities to take you safely from place to place. ![]() For me and my boyfriend, it’s not about getting away from each other but about getting away from ourselves. There are lots of reasons to go it alone. ![]() Sure, there are moments when it would be nice to have someone listen to your running dialogue of the neat stuff you see or to have someone to split all the food with. When exploring the world, you’ll have enemies to fight and puzzles to solve. Don’t go into Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion with thoughts of a grand world which takes you hours to travel across, play it expecting a comfy world which you will know like the back of your own hand by the end of the game, and look at that as the positive that it is. I think this might be one of my favourite types of game, tiny Zelda inspired games where I can memorise the world layout in a couple of hours, see Anodyne, Minit, and of course this game. ![]() Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying I prefer this to most Zelda games, what I’m saying is there’s something satisfying about knowing an entire world inside out, it makes you feel intelligent when you always know where to go, not because you’ve been told but because you remember somebody asking for a certain item, in your typical Zelda game the worlds are so big you don’t really get that intimacy with them. Of course, the whole game isn’t a document destruction simulator (although I’d play that), the rest of the game is very Zelda like just way shorter, Zelda lite if you will and part of me prefers Zelda lite. These are some of the best jokes in the game, I won’t spoil any of them until the spoiler section but it’s hilarious seeing somebody hand you something they’ve worked hard on, or something they’re just showing you to get your opinion on just for you to rip it up in front of them, it’s so chaotic and I love it. The game introduces you to the concept of ripping up documents right at the beginning when you are presented with your taxes, you are given two options, read or rip up, since reading doesn’t progress the plot and games are a power fantasy where ripping up your taxes won’t put you in jail of course you rip it up, this introduces you to your main goal, find all the documents in the game and rip them up. ![]() These quests will have you exploring a small yet densely packed world, visiting fun and unique locations, meeting cool new characters, and ripping up a ton of documents. Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion follows Turnip Boy as he does a ton of quests for Mayor Onion to make up for the fact that he committed tax evasion. Whilst the game does have some shortcomings which prevent it from joining the indie greats, it’s a game which I struggle to imagine wouldn’t be enjoyable to anybody who decides to pick it up and I do recommend you pick it up. Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion kept me smiling through the short three hours it took me to 100% the game, smiling both with laughter and just at the general cuteness of it all. What I got instead was one of the funniest games I’ve ever played which has enough interesting ideas to keep the gameplay enjoyable enough throughout. I thought I knew what I was getting when I first loaded up “Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion”, it was going to be a Zelda clone with little to none of its own personality gameplay-wise but maybe some good humour that could make me reluctantly recommend the game. ![]() I’m going to be tucking the Powercard into my pocket on all future days out. This meant that I was able to continue taking photos and staying in touch with my friends all evening long. I plugged it into the Powercard, popped it in my pocket and by the time we’d got into town, for the meal and evening out, the phone was close to fully charged. It was just after the rugby and as the sun came down that my phone got dangerously low to empty. Further to this, it charges super fast (three times quicker than a standard USB charger) and can charge your phone for 5 hours, giving you lots of power on the go – more than enough for emergency charges. This means it will fit in your wallet or in a coat pocket without you even noticing. Monster’s Powercard is great because its tiny, about the size of a credit card and pretty thin too. I’ve been apprehensive about this sort of gadget before because I don’t want to be luggy a battery pack around all day. It’s a really nice little piece of kit, the best thing about it is its size. It’s a Powercard by Monster and can recharge your phone for five hours! Luckily I’ve got my hands on a new gizmo that solves this issue easily and conveniently. No chance to stop and get the phone back up to a half decent level of charge. I had an awesome jam packed day which included: a trip out to a Cornish Wrestling (pronounced wrassling) demonstration and have a go session, beer and a mahoosive pasty, watching the Rugby in the pub and then in the evening drinks out in town and a meal at Hubbox. ![]() I have these days all the time, regularly it gets to the evening and my phone dies and I can’t take photos or keep in touch easily with friends. This problem is always worse when you’ve got an epic day planned and at no point will you be having a pit stop or the chance to recharge the phone. ![]() So when the battery is depleted and it dies, it can be pathetically scary. Monster is known most for its vast and expansive line of audio-related accessories such as its premium audio cables and headphones. Great value and easy to transport, its perfect for quick emergency charges. In the modern world a phone isn’t just for ringing people, I use my to listen to music, take photos, keep in touch socially, look at maps, play games and loads more. Super thin, it fits snugly into your wallet and offers power wherever you go. You don’t ever feel more at one with nature than when you’re totally off the grid whilst at the same time, everyone nowadays (for better or worse) feels as if they have a missing limb once they reach 0% battery. If you’re a modern outdoorsman or someone with a hectic lifestyle, no doubt you’ll have become stuck in between the rock and the hard place which is the smart phone. ![]() Once people graduate from high school, they tend to skip town in favor of bigger cities with work and college opportunities.
